Feature Writing: Transforming Yourself Into a Medium
In many ways, feature writing is like photography. The process starts with intense observation, visual as well as auditory, in fact all-sensory. So I take a mental picture of the object, person, or situation. Sometimes I become the fly on the wall to calibrate my objectivity. After the immersion, I need to regain my distance and let information and impressions let themselves sort out. Some facts will float to the top, others become residue. And finally, I reach into my toolbox. In writing I do not need dektol or fixer, but a whole lot of craft goes into mincing, smithing, and seasoning words. To what end? So that you, the reader, may be transposed into my world of substantive experience.
I have been writing feature articles since graduating from high school. My writings have been published in various European and US media. In the process, I have learned about many subjects I could not imagine existed. Most recently, I have been contributing to our community publication, Up Close.
